Dana’s Recovery from Migranes and Chronic Pain

Background

Dana’s recovery from debilitating Migraines and chronic hamstring pain has so many reflections into anyone’s life suffering with persistent pain.

She describes her early life filled with various Adverse Childhood Experiences (Felitti, 1998) including functioning alcoholic parents, a lack of early education into emotional regulation and a strong desire to be nurtured and accepted by the adults in her life.

In order to cope, she reports developing various unhelpful personality traits, including people pleasing and lacking personal boundaries, which ensured she was always putting others needs first and always seeing how she could learn more about the people around her to be even more accepted by them. Dana notes so clearly how these personality traits came up due to her childhood and how the use of them became part of the solution to her conditions.

Dana’s story about recognising head pain for the first time in her early years is a facinating insight into how early she recognised her symptoms coming on, and how she could clearly see how this was related to her desire to be accepted and acknowledged by her father.

Dana’s resolution from migraines and chronic hamstring pain predominantly took the form of app based treatment – namely Cureable, DARE and EFTT (Emotion Focussed Therapy for Trauma). She states how she was made aware of the mindbody connection through the book ‘The Mind Body Prescription’, Dr John Sarno, which was given to her by a Physiotherapist. A gift that was initially met with some distrust of the giver!

After reading Dr Sarno’s book, Dana soon realised that her condition’s fit so many of the complaints shared in ‘The Mind Body Prescription’, and she was compelled to embark on a search for a solution. By then she had tried so many different methods, it was hard to see what she had to lose.

Before finding extraordinary success with Cureable, DARE and EFTT, Dana’s recovery journey had taken her to explore many different unsuccessful treatments including multiple different maximum strength migraine medications, which she reports left her with large gaps in her memory, Botox injections, which had an excruciating reignition of pain when they wore off after six weeks, massage, various extreme diets, personal training and physiotherapy. All of which had offered her little to no change in her pain, and some with worrying side effects.

After starting Cureable, she explains that having suffered since she was around sixteen to when she was fifty one, a huge thirty five year journey, Dana had a significant improvement in her symptoms in three months. A life changing turning point and has only improvise that could have in the past, led to a flair up in her symptoms.

Dana’s Top Methodologies

We discussed what she does when she feels any familiar symptoms, to stop a flair up before it begins

  • DARE app breathing exercises

  • Somatic tracking exercises

  • EFT tapping along with positive self talk

  • Journaling

  • Beneficial distraction – with healthy activities as oppose to doom scrolling or playing games on her phone.

Journaling has shown to be extrodinarily good for both mental and physical health and is often recommended in mindbody prescription work (Pennebaker, J., & Smyth, J. 2016)

EFT tapping is shown to be effective for PTSD among war veterans, sexual violence survivors, motor vehicle accident survivors, prisoners, disaster survivors, and hospital patients. It has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of both general anxiety and depression. (Church, 2018)

Dana has such wonderful explanation of her process to recovery and I was so impressed with her honesty when she states how much work she had to do on her mindset before she could reach a point of change. That the external world around her was not going to change, but by truly forgiving and letting the anger go that she had been holding onto the external world no longer provided the stimulus for her migraines and hamstring pain. She had truly let go.

Dana eloquently explains that the biggest thing that had to change in order for her resolution to come about was her own mindset. The barrier to her healing was not finanical or anything in a practical sense, but the limitations put in place, by a younger more afraid version of herself whose neural pathways were still in place, wreaking havoc on her adult life. When she could see her thought patterns for what they were she was able to move out of her own way to find success.

Dana has so much wisdom to share with the world. She runs a podcast which is well worth listening to for further information about the mind-body connection and her work as a chronic pain specialist personal trainer.

Personality ‘Key Elements’

Dana embodies to me, a few key elements, that I had discussed before in Nam’s interview that I hypothesise we shall see more of, in people who have successfully navigated out of chronic conditions. Her ‘Healing Traits’ include:

  • Self reflection, to make connections in her life from times of difficult and onset of symptoms

  • Self-lead learner, to have the desire and ability to learn from what she was being taught through Dr Sarno and Cureable and to continue to keep ‘showing up’ for herself knowing it is and was her inner healing that had to do the work.

  • Honest, her insight into her own faults and learning as a mother, as a teacher, as a student and as a sufferer of chronic pain, displayed a truthfulness that she had been through a lot of person growth and could see both the positive and negative in her traits.

  • Confident. Her eloquence and ease in answering all our questions showed wonderful clarity of mind and self assured wisdom. She has so clearly earnt it through hard work.

  • Hard working. Dana has worked for her resolution. She has put the time into learning so many new skills and applying them daily to her life. She has repaired injured relationships with those around her and continues to be a teacher to her students to help them connect and heal their own overwhelming emotions. To help her students listen to their bodies as well as she has learnt to.

Barriers, Mistakes and Lessons

  • Generally we felt this interview went very smoothly. No doubt helped by the fact that Dana and I had already done an hour long podcast together (Pain-Free Althete’s Podcast) which gave us a comfort in our discussion. From this smoothness, I have learnt how important it is to build a relationship with those who we speak to, to fully understand their live and the ways they communicate the most comfortably.

  • Practice interview set up and zoom meeting testing! Convinced that we are technical luddites, we were worried that something was bound to go wrong so we made three different recorded tests to ensure we had all the right settings so the recording looked exactly how we wanted.

  • We have learnt to record the audio files on Zoom on two separate recordings, in case my agreeing or ‘Hmming’ is too loud over the speaker’s answer.

Dana points out a few key features about her healing approach, which may be relevant in a wider perspective of all successful approaches to pain resolution:

  • Learning how to interpret sensations – Somatic awareness meditation

  • Awareness of breathe and it’s use as a tool

  • Reflection – through journalling

  • Forgiveness

  • A methodology (Cureable) that allows you to go at your own pace and won’t bill you if you miss an appointment – lower risk financially and emotionally

  • Education as to the mind-body connection

From a pre-school age until seven years old she remembers periods of time where, with no fixed pattern her left leg would go entirely numb and she would be unable to move it at all. This would last for a period of 1-3 days in which time it would slowly improve. This would happen approximately every month and medical intervention and investigations did not reveal the cause of her symptoms.
